Out of Office

The Go-Gos said it best: "Vacation, all I ever wanted; Vacation- had to get away." These last few years have been intense. We're all chomping at the bit to get the heck out of Dodge! I suspect there will be many footprints in the sand, many roller coaster loops ridden, and many Pina Coladas consumed this Summer. 

But what are your plans after your Summer fun? What breaks will you give yourself while you wait for your next vacation? 

Taking time off is vital to our mental and physical well-being. Yet, Americans are terrible at it, especially compared to our European counterparts. Europeans enjoy approximately 38 days of time off a year compared to the U.S. average of 17 days.  

  • European out-of-offices: "I'm away camping for the Summer. Email again in September."

  • American out-of-offices: "I'm out of the office until noon having kidney surgery. You can reach me on my cell anytime."

One way to incorporate more breaks and time away is through wellness retreats. Retreats are less expensive and easier to plan; they also offer more long-term benefits than vacations due to being an intentional time for rest and self-reflection. Science tells us that being in nature is incredibly good for us! Researchers at Japan's Chiba University created a study to look at the powers of relaxation found in nature. They had 84 participants take a stroll in the forest and 84 take a walk in the city center. Those who walked in the forest were noticeably more relaxed than their city trekking counterparts. They experienced a 16% decrease in their cortisol (stress hormone) levels, a 2% decrease in blood pressure, and a 4% decrease in heart rate. 

Researchers believe we are more relaxed when in nature because that is where we evolved. Our senses are adapted to interpret scenes of plants and streams, not traffic and buildings.
